Adding Exercise to Your Day

 

Something is better than nothing.  If there’s no time for a half hour walk, go for a 5 minute one.

  • Introduce Exercise into your Daily Activity Plan One Step at a TimeThe challenge is to think creatively about ways you might add ‘steps’ to your day. Here are just a few ideas:
  • Take the stairs as often as possible,
  • Park several blocks from your destination or park at the rear of the parking lot,
  • Walk the last few blocks instead of riding the bus all the way to work,
  • Get off the elevator below your destination and walk a couple of flights of stairs,
  • Park at the opposite end of the mall where you need to shop,
  • Walk or bicycle to shopping or other errands.
  • Use a stationary bicycle, treadmill, or stretch band while watching television

Create a walking routine:

  • Organize a lunchtime walking group at work, or a before-or after-work group with friends or neighbors.
  • Instead of watching television after dinner, get outside for a game of basketball, catch, tag, Frisbee or a walk around the block.

One step at a time.

Begin your exercise program gradually. Don’t expect to run a marathon within a month. Exercise should not feel like punishment, so choose the type you are most likely to enjoy. If you dislike an activity you’re not likely to continue. Begin with what is easiest for you.

  • Set reasonable goals, and write them down.
  • Pace yourself.  If you’re just starting plan to add a few minutes each day
  • Incorporate fitness into your lifestyle.
  • Motivate yourself.
  • Get a support system. Enlist friends, or family.  Perhaps a neighbor would like to walk with you
  • Expect setbacks and prepare for obstacles.

If you have not been regularly active, or have any health concerns, consult your doctor before you begin an exercise program.
